What do you teach?

Our instructors teach piano using a classical approach, but teach rock or popular music as well.

How do lessons generally work?

Students meet with their instructor usually once a week either online or in studio. Goals are discussed so our instructors can develop a customized curriculum for you. Each week, you will work towards your goals with the help of one of our expert instructors. We generally have recitals for you to showcase your skills once a year.

What ages do you teach?

We teach piano of all levels and ages 5 and up. It's possible for younger students to begin piano, so if your child is younger than 5, we would hop on a video call for a quick test to see whether he/she is ready to begin. It's also important to note that you can begin piano at any age. Most of our students here are actually adults!

What are your standards? Can I learn to play just for fun?

Goals are discussed before and/or during your first session. Your instructor will hold you to the standard you want them to. We've had students who have passed intense, standardized exams, ones who are professional musicians who regularly gig, and we've also taught many students who simply wanted to play for themselves for fun. Either way, we do require regular practice!

Do you offer free trials?

At this current time we don't, however you're welcome to book a one-off lesson (with no monthly commitment).

Is an instrument needed at home and if so what sort?

Contrary to what most think, you're not required to have an instrument before beginning lessons with us! We have plenty of things you can do away from the piano that will ultimately contribute to your playing when you are ready to purchase an instrument. For most students, I recommend an acoustic piano when possible. If an acoustic piano will not work for you due to pricing, space, or noise issues, I recommend and eventually require a keyboard with weighted keys. The Yamaha P 71 or P 115 (https://amzn.to/2Xv8xS9) are two of my favorites for beginners. Please note the link above is an affiliate link.

What do you charge?

Tuition rates may change based on availability. Please email info@larasmusic.com for our current rates. We are not the cheapest studio in the area, but the proof is in the pudding! Please see our reviews.

Do you offer any discounts?

We don't usually, but if we have more space than usual, we may offer a lower rate for a limited time.

Are your teaching hours fixed or flexible?

Most of our instructors are flexible, but it's helpful to have a regular time every week.

What do you expect from parents?

I expect parents to remind children of practice time and make sure that they complete their practice each day. Parents of younger children (8 and below) need to supervise practice and make sure they are practicing properly. I see dramatically different results from students whose parents sit with them to practice.
